two things happened on the train today:

1) a guy, very overcaffeinated, asked me for fifty cents, then a cigarette, then to see the newspaper i was reading, then what day it was, and rhetorically if the paper comes out on saturday. he then proceeded to bounce off the walls.

2) a guy trying to board the train fall over backwards, then the driver steps out and asks him what the problem is - his friend says the guy lost his phone in the crack between the platform and the train, but the guy said that he "doesn't need it". might not have even lost a phone, might've just been drunk.

because my dad believes that i have only had one group of friends ever, i've got to address that group. the thing that separates they and i is my undying love of media. where they criticize as "one of those shows set in chicago but obviously filmed somewhere else" i'm one to defensively check that it was in fact filmed in chicago according to the imdb and love it anyway. where they were critical, cynical, selective, i have an undying love that media that shows any smidgen of joy exists. wherever a cool idea lies.

when walking to my dorm, i am convinced i will be shot. no IIT student has, in my tenure here, been shot. it's a relative island of security. there are no bullet holes in the glass, no reported gang-related fatalities. but i'm convinced that one night, someone drunk with a car and a gun will take me down.

coming back at night isn't so bad, what i mind is living on an island of white in a sea of black. i never feel quite right on the train. maybe because there aren't many of the quiet but awake sort.
